Caught Red...Hooved!

We suspected someone had been nibbling on our tomato plants.  And tonight we caught the thief...in the act.

Having just returned from the garden after picking a basketful of toms, I washed them in the sink and was heading out to the garage to get our pressure cooker when I spotted this guy standing in our garden.

Uninvited diner

Dinner at dusk

Looks like he's enjoying his meal.  Poor thing is so skinny and scrawny looking.  He's not very old, we figure he's about eighteen months old.  Looks like he's already had a rough life with some injuries on his neck and shoulder.

Seeing him in the vegetable garden created a bit of a dilemma for us; on the one hand it was a surprise and a real treat to see a buck eating our tomatoes, but on the other he was eating our tomatoes!!!  We stood and watched him for a bit, and he watched us, then he turned and wandered off into the tree farm.

All in all a pleasant Monday evening surprise.  :)

  3. Oh they are so bad.  I have a friend who can't keep anything growing in her yard, including roses...the nearby deer eat everything.  Linda in WA

  5. Oh man...I would be having the same dilemma exactly!!   We want to move to a more "country-like" area...and I wonder how I'd handle situations like that one.

    Beautiful shots...espec. the first.

  6. Those are great photos. Must had been great to have a deer in your backyard. After a year of apartment living, we moved to a new home in the burbs so I've been gardening too and enjoying the sight of butterfliesand birds but no deer.

  7. Oh I understand how you feel about your tomatoes being eaten, I have a small garden here in SC, but like you, he looked like he was hungry. So all in all, you really helped him out.  Your loss his weight gain, lol.  AJ

  8. Scrawny or not, he still looks like a magnificent creature.  Sorry about the effect he has on your garden, but I think this picture may have been worth the sacrifice.  Great shots, thanks for sharing them with us.
